Cross Country Skiing
Day Skiing
Day trips, operated throughout the Alpine National Park, include skills development and a short tour. The tour destination will be influenced by the experience of the group and prevailing weather conditions.
Ski Touring
Overnight trips allow us to venture further into the Alpine National Park and experience a stay near a mountain hut or snow camping or snow caving. A balance is struck between pack touring and skiing from a base camp. Weather navigation and safety considerations are discussed combined with snow craft activities where appropriate. Opportunities for telemarking, short side trips and photography abound. The tour destination will be influenced by the experience of the group and prevailing weather conditions.
Equipment
A range of skis including some featuring multi-fit bindings which will accommodate Sorel snow boots or walking boots are available for hire as well as cross country ski boots and poles.
Snow Shoeing
An alternative mode of travel in these environments, the snow shoe offers a simple means of accessing the High Country.
Steep Snow Travel
This course focuses on safely and efficiently traversing steep snow, either walking, skiing or snow shoeing. Techniques including use of ice axe and assessing steep snow stability to explore the boundary between alpine travel and mountaineering.
Introduction to Mountaineering
Intended as a familiarisation course on the use of ice axe, crampons and rope work associated with mountain travel. These skills and equipment are common to techniques used in mountaineering training courses world-wide. We have been running training programs in New Zealand for 38 years.
