Mal Cowell
Mal Cowell

Malcolm began climbing, kayaking, and skiing in 1970, developing personal skills whilst studying for a degree in geology and environmental science and later a teaching qualification. Several seasons of Scottish ice climbing, alpine mountaineering in France and Switzerland, white water kayaking in the U.K and France were undertaken before beginning his professional instructor experience with the The National Mountain Centre, Plas Y Brenin in the late 1970s.

Arriving in Australia in 1981, he worked as an outdoor education lecturer at tertiary institutions, as an adventure guide (sea kayaking, skiing, rafting, climbing) in Australia, as a mountain and ski guide Mt.Cook, in New Zealand and Chamonix, France and as an outdoor education teacher in schools. As well as professional instruction, he has four decades experience of summer and winter climbing and skiing in Europe, New Zealand and North America; climbing in the Karakoram Himalaya, Pakistan, the Garwhal Himalaya and Kashmir, India; sea kayaking the Fiordland coast of New Zealand, the west coast of Scotland and much of the coast of eastern Australia; river kayaking and rafting from the Herbert in Queensland to the Franklin in Tasmania. After a two month solo expedition exploring the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska by sea kayak, the purchase of a 34ft yacht based in Ladysmith, Vancouver Island has enabled 10 years of sailing and kayaking in British Columbia and Alaska, as far north as Glacier Bay down to the Californian coast.

Malcolm is an Australian Canoeing Senior Instructor and Examiner and has Marine Board qualifications for charter boats. A 30 year member of the New Zealand Mountain Guides Association with summer and winter guides training, professional avalanche and British Mountain Leadership Certificates, Malcolm has worked as a Field Training Officer for the Australian Antarctic Division at Casey Station. He has Full Registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and is a Training Systems Officer with the Royal Australian Navy.

Company History
Spindrift International Guiding began as vehicle for introducing clients to climbing, rafting, ski touring and sea kayaking in the early 1980s.
The emergence of Wilsons Prom Sea Kayaking and marine and mountain training reflect the company's expansion and diversification into other recreational pursuits. Wilsons Prom Sea Kayaking was established to facilitate skill development and provide sea touring opportunities available in the beautiful yet challenging environment of Wilsons Promontory and Corner Inlet.
